Wuhan University
Wuhan University (WHU) is an extensive and key national university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education. It is also one of the “211 Project” and “985 Project” universities with full support in the construction and development from the central and local government of China.
The history of Wuhan University can be traced back to Ziqiang Institute, which was established in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Hubei Province and Hunan Province in the late Qing Dynasty. In the process of development and evolution, the institute changed its name many times before it was finally named Wuhan National University in 1928. This university is one of the earliest extensive national universities in modern China. By the end of 1946, the university has founded 6 colleges, the colleges of liberal art, law, sciences, engineering, agriculture, and medicine.
In 2000, an amalgamation of the former Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Hydraulic & Electric Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying & Mapping, and Hubei Medical University was announced, which ushered in a new era in its 100-odd years of development. For the past century, Wuhan University has built a classic palatial architectural complex of primitive simplicity which blends perfectly the eastern architectural style with that of the west. It is honored as the “Most Beautiful University in China.” Moreover, Wuhan University’s centennial humanistic accumulation boils down to its succinct motto, that is, “Improve Oneself, Promote Perseverance, Seek Truth and Make Innovations.”
Presently, Wuhan University has 6 faculties and 37 schools, covering 12 areas, namely Philosophy, Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, Sciences, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Management and Arts, with 124 undergraduate programs, 347 graduate programs, and 243 doctoral programs. There are numbers of large well-equipped teaching buildings, laboratories, gymnasiums, sports grounds, swimming pools, archive buildings, and a specimen building.
The university’s libraries have a collection of nearly 5.2 million volumes and subscribe to over 10,000 kinds of Chinese and foreign periodicals. It has now 5 key State-level laboratories, 11 State-level laboratories, 2 State-level research centers in engineering, 7 national research bases for humanities and social sciences, 10 national bases for basic science talent development, and 42 post-doctoral stations.
Wuhan University has now around 55,000 students, including 31,886 undergraduates and 23,366 graduates. The teaching staff consists of over 3,700 teachers, including 3,000 or so professors and associate professors, 1200 doctor supervisors, 8 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 8 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 academicians of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and 9 senior scholars of arts and social sciences.
Since its establishment, Wuhan University has cultivated over 300 thousand professional talents in various occupations, among whom there are over 100 members of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. They have made a great contribution to national construction and social advancement. The achievements of Wuhan University have won itself an extensive international reputation. In 1999, the world-famous journal Science listed Wuhan University as one of the most prominent institutions of higher education in China.
Since the 1950s, Wuhan University has taken a lead in enrolling foreign students in China. Ever since then, the university has recruited and trained several 1000 foreign students coming from over 100 different countries and regions worldwide. All students have received systematic training and a substantial part of them have achieved Bachelor’s, Masters or Doctoral Degree. At present, there are more than 2000 long-term international students at Wuhan University, and over half of them are actively pursuing degrees.
Wuhan University accepts international students into its Bachelor, Master, Doctoral programs as well as other advanced programs in liberal arts, sciences, and medicine. The university also provides a special Bachelor of Arts program called the Chinese Language for International Students and there have been 7 groups of graduates from the program. Besides all levels of Chinese language teaching, the university provides courses such as Chinese literature, Chinese history, Chinese economy, Chinese philosophy, and Chinese law for international students. To fulfill their various requirements, these courses will introduce basic knowledge of the society, economy, history, and culture of China.
The School of International Education of Wuhan University is a dedicated school for foreign students enlistment, administration, and management, as well as Chinese language teaching and training. Wuhan University is also one of the few centers for HSK examination and for the qualification examination for the teachers teaching Chinese language to foreigners in China. The college, with abundant teaching resources and quality teaching and scientific research strength, has 34 teachers giving Chinese language courses to foreigners. Amongst them, 14 are professors or associate professors, 4 are the members of the World Chinese Language Society for Foreigners, and 30 are the members of China Chinese Language Society for Foreigners.
Burgeoning is the international exchanges and cooperation of WHU in recent years. It has established a cooperative relationship with over 400 universities and research institutes in more than 70 countries and regions. Today Wuhan University is endeavoring to shape itself into a world-class comprehensive research university domestically and internationally.

Expenses in Wuhan University
1. Tuition Fee:
- Non-degree: 8,500 to 17,000 RMB
- Bachelor degree: 20,000 to 40,000 RMB/Year
- Master degree: 19,700 to 50,000 RMB/ Year
- Doctoral degree: 30,000 to 46,000 RMB/Year

After you are admitted, we will inform you via email for your confirmation of acceptance. Afterward, we will issue the admission letter, JW201/202 Form for visa application. If you wish to live on the campus, please complete the Housing Application form.
Prepare Your Departure:
Before your departure, be sure to take the following materials:

Be aware that the orientation is mandatory for freshman students.
Admission Procedure
Apply for a course in a Chinese University is very easy. Students just have to follow some steps to apply for their favorite course. In order to help students complete their online application, International students are recommended to follow the simple instructions.
Foreign applicants must provide the following documents to apply:
1. Application Form fills in Chinese or in English.
2. Passport & Passport Size Photo (Scan copy )
- Passport
Dear student, the first thing you need to have a passport. This is more important documents because without a passport you can not go to study in your dream country. To have passport make you secure to live or study abroad. So if you don’t have it, we suggest you make your passport ready from the embassy office in your home country. Moreover if you have your passport already, then make sure your passport expiry date will not be expired. If it already be expired then you need to remake your passport.
- Passport Size Photo
The passport photo size (50mm x 40mm) in general. The photo should be clear and the background must be plain, white or off-white in color. The height of the head should be between 28mm – 33mm.The head width has to be between 21mm–24mm. Submit a color photo, taken in the last 6 months. Use a clear image of your face. Passport photo should not use filters on the face or take your photo from someone else or selfies. Take off your eyeglasses for your photo. Here is the sample of Passport Size Photo.
3. Transcripts & Certificates (Must be Notarized Copy )
Students for Bachelor Degree need to provide their school transcripts and certificates. For Master Degree Applicants have to bring their undergraduate transcripts and certificates. And Doctorate Degree studies must provide their both (undergraduate and graduate) transcripts and certificates.
Please take as a note that is, all the transcripts and certificates should be notarized.
Note : Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or English.
4. English Proficiency Certificate
In China, some universities does not asked IELTS but if you study in Chinese Taught for CSC scholarship, English Proficiency Certificate need to have ready. If you have IELTS already then you are lucky to study in China without delay.
5. CV/Resume
Applicants must have to prepare their CV if they want to study abroad in their desired country. The Resume or CV should include their academic qualifications with results, personal details (name, date of birth, marital status, national Id or school Id, physical address, contact no, nationality, language, etc), reference from your institution’s faculty (his/her name, address and designation), personal achievement, etc. To know how to make a standard CV please click here the sample of The Resume.
6. Study Plan or Research Proposal (Ms/PhD)
Applicants for graduate studies need a study plan or research proposal in Chinese or in English (no less than 800 words). This document is required only for Ms or PhD applicants.
7. Recommendation Letter (Ms/PhD)
Applicants for all graduate studies need two letters of recommendation from full professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English). Letters must be include professors’ phone number and email address. Here is the sample of Recommendation Letter.
8. Published Academic Papers or Other Academic Achievements (if applicable).
9. Foreign Physical Examination
Applicants are expected to keep the original copies filled in English. The medical examination must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Medical examination results will be valid for 6 months. All applicants are kindly requested to take this factor into consideration as they plan to take the medical examination. 10. Bank Statement
Bank statements must show to any foreign country for the purpose of a visitor or a business or an immigrants. For the study purpose in foreign countries also need to show bank statement. So dear applicants, you will need to have ready your all documents. Sponsorship can be your parents or anyone whom are your blood related.
11. Police Verification (No Criminal Record)
This is also need to have ready for the study purpose. It is important because foreign country does not allow criminal record. A Police Clearance Certificate is an official document approved by the police or government agencies in order to prove that the applicant has no criminal offense against him/her like arrest, conviction. By the end of 1946, the university has founded 6 colleges, the colleges of liberal art, law, sciences, engineering, agriculture, and medicine. In 2000, an amalgamation of the former Wuhan University, WHU of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping, and Hubei Medical University was announced, which ushered in a new era in its 100-odd years of development.
For the past century, Wuhan University has built a classic palatial architectural complex of primitive simplicity which blends perfectly the eastern architectural style with that of the west. It is honored as the “Most Beautiful University in China.” Moreover, Wuhan University’s centennial humanistic accumulation boils down to its succinct motto, that is, “Self-improvement, Perseverance, Truth-seeking & Innovation.”
Since its establishment, Wuhan University has cultivated over 300 thousand professional talents in various occupations, among whom there are more than 100 members of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. They have made a great contribution to national construction & social advancement. The remarkable achievements of WHU have achieved itself an extensive international reputation. In 1999, the world-famous journal Science listed Wuhan University as one of the most prominent institutions of higher education in China.
Burgeoning is the international exchanges and cooperation of WHU in current years. It has established a cooperative relationship with more than 415 universities and research institutes in over 45 countries and regions.
Today, Wuhan University is endeavoring to shape itself into a world-class comprehensive research university domestically and internationally.
